Most films released with such little promotion are horrible, but “The Thief Lord” is actually quite good. One of its finest selling points is that it contains none of the gross adult humor that is so popular in modern children’s movies. “The Thief Lord” is based on the German children’s book with the same name by Cornelia Funke. Although the same complaint about adaptations applies: The movie is almost never as good as the book, this should not keep anyone from enjoying the film.

There are a few minor changes to the story mostly to make it better suited to the screen, but the movie follows the book fairly closely, and the plot moves a lot quicker than its literary counterpart. Orphans Prosper and his younger brother Bo run away to Venice, the city from their mother’s fairy tales, because their aunt wants to separate them. Upon arriving in Venice, the boys come under the protection of an older boy known as the Thief Lord who shelters a group of homeless street kids. However, their aunt isn’t about to give up that easily, and a detective is soon on hot Prosper’s and Bo’s trail. When the Thief Lord agrees to perform a special theft for a mysterious count, the children, the detective, a photographer, and a crooked antiques dealer are all drawn into something much larger than any of them could have guessed.

The children are well cast. The boys playing Prosper and Bo are the cutest kids since the boys picked to play Ron Weasley in the first Harry Potter movie and Colin Creevey in the second, and Riccio looks like a young Johnny Rotten right down to the teeth. The film itself is well shot. It is obvious that this was a low budget film when it comes to the special effects, but things don’t always have to look like they cost millions of dollars. The makeup and effects could have been better for Scipio’s transformation though. That’s the only real disappointment.

Overall, this movie is better than much of what is out there.

Up until the day that I saw “The Thief Lord” on the DVD shelf, I was entirely unfamiliar with it and the book it’s based on. It was a wonderful surprise. It follows the lives of two young boys named Prosper and Boniface who trek off to Venice in order to remain together after losing their mother. She always told them how magical Venice was, and their expectations were high. Instead, they are left to fend for themselves on the street until they meet the Thief Lord. He’s sort of a cross between Robin Hood and Peter Pan, though his intentions aren’t to stay young forever.

The Thief Lord houses a small band of orphans in an old theater, and Prosper and Bo join them. They gain the trust of the group when Prosper haggles with a local antiques dealer and garners a large sum of money for the group. As the story rolls along, Bo and Prosper’s relatives hire a private eye to seek them out. They also run into a nice photographer who ends up helping them quite a bit during their adventures. Eventually, the duo uncover some wild information about the Thief Lord, hunt for a magical wing, and help there fellow orphans along the way. It’s all done in a wonderful and child-like fashion. The magic of Venice is slowly revealed and results in quite a grand climax. The antiques dealer adds a nice bit of comic relief, especially near the end of the film.

In closing, give “The Thief Lord” a chance. It doesn’t have the same budget as many other modern “family friendly” films, but it is a much better film overall. It’s getting a lot of comparison to the “Harry Potter” flicks, but I believe that it stands apart from that film and really doesn’t have much in common with it other than the English accents. I highly recommend it, especially if you have children, but I even recommend it to adults who simply enjoy magical tales.

I saw this film when it opened on July 24, 2009. Mixed reviews from fans and critics were the usual flair upon its release, but something struck me about this movie. The film went on to gross $37 million at the box-office despite the thrashing it took from critics, but everyone couldn’t help but notice the Oscar-nomination worthy performance of its 12-year-old star Isabelle Fuhrman. I just viewed the film on DVD for the first time since its theaterical run and I’m still seeing just how riveting and engaging this movie really is.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Orphan! Click Here

“Orphan” is NOT a horror film. It’s more along the lines of a SUSPENSE THRILLER. When I think of horror films, I think of sex-crazed teenagers being sliced up one-by-one by a machete-wielding maniac (Jason Voorhies, Freddy Krueger, Micheal Myers, etc.). The only real weapons wielded here is just a hammer, a knife, and a .38-caliber pistol. You think scary when it comes to horror films and “Orphan” isn’t scary. Has some frightful moments, yes, but scary? Wishful thinking!

Set in the winter-bound parts of Conneticut & Canada, the story centers on the Coleman family: Kate (Vera Farmiga), a Yale University music teacher recovering from alcoholism and bouts of depression after having a stillborn from her third pregnancy; John (Peter Sarsgaard), an architech whose nice guy persona overshadows his increasing issues with Kate that led to past affairs; Max (Aryana Engineer), their deaf 5-year-old daughter who communicates through sign language and their oldest son Daniel (Jimmy Bennett), who feels bitterly neglected & increasingly isolated from his parents. As a way of coping with the loss of their would-be 2nd daughter, Jessica, and to amend their existence as a family, Kate & John make a fateful decision to adopt a young girl at the local orphanage.

It is here where they meet Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman), a sweet-looking 9-year-old Russian girl harboring some deep-seeded issues of her own despite her angelic smile and sympathetic mannerisms. Upon arriving home with new stepdaughter in tow, a series of events unravel to make everyone question the background and sincerity of this little girl. Daniel dislikes her immediately, Max forms an unhealthy bond with her new stepsister, Kate begins to seek out further information about Esther’s background, & John just plays Devil’s Advocate with all that occurs involving Esther. What’s wrong with Esther? Is it true that behind the smile of this little angel beats the heart of a psycho killer?

The answer, and the big secret about who she really is, lies within the confines of this 123-minute thriller. I agree with everyone here that it moves at a near-torturous snail’s pace, that being the film’s major fatal flaw. But the story itself is so entralling and engaging, you can’t help but to excuse that misfire. Fuhrman’s performance alone keeps you involved in the twists and turns entrenched here. Only a young, superbly talented actress like Fuhrman was able to pull off a psychological undertaking of switching from sympathetic manipulator to disturbed sadist and it’s why I feel she should get an Oscar nod. But due to the overall dislike of the film itself from most critics and for her young age, she probably won’t get anywhere near sniffing distance of the balloting.

Nonetheless, I was so inspired by this film and became such a fan that I created my own 20-song, hard-rock CD Mix (liner notes & all) of songs inspired by the movie (my own psuedo-soundtrack, if you will, but John Ottman’s score was cool). Seemingly destined to go down as a cult favorite, if not a classic, “Orphan” was a solid & enjoyable thrill ride that’s essentially “The Hand That Rocks The Cradle”, “The Good Son”, “The Crush”, and a more mean-spirited version of “Problem Child” all rolled into one. That’s why this movie isn’t a horror despite being classified as one. This film has a depth, substance, and intuitiveness to it that Jason, Micheal, & Freddy couldn’t touch with a bloddy axe. Just take sweet, little Esther home and let her hold you, thrill you, kiss you, …. kill you!!! Can someone out there please say “CULT CLASSIC”? – DEM –

Many people find that describing the movie to give a movie review is the way to go. Usually, I refrain, but on this occasion, I will include the plot. A husband and wife, already with two children of their own (one who is deaf) lose their third child during labor. They resort to adopting an orphan–a 9-year-old, seemingly intelligent and kind-hearted, little Russian girl. Much to their dismay, what seems to be the perfect adoption turns into anything but. The movie moves at a slow but determined pace for the first 45 minutes or so, but then the rockin’ starts to rollin’ as the story spirals into a cacophony of strangeness accompanied with mountains of vindictive mayhem. Many reviews I have read had a problem with the twist; I thought it to be VERY COOL, and something that could become reality in the realm of possibility, which makes it all the more founded, thus being all the more horrific. Just before the twist; however, something happened that made me think, “Okay, here we go…right back into the silly Hollywood horror film crap that has been bombarding us throughout the beginning of the new century.” But when the twist hits and everything finally makes sense, I was thankfully pulled from that train of thought and taken back into a bizarre and wonderful story. Dark Castle Entertainment has done a LOT of movies that I simply love (Gothika, Ghost Ship, and Thirteen Ghosts.) This one will have to go into that group of five-star movies. Don’t miss it!

FIVE STARS ***** for everything being done the way it should be done!

This is a review of the Kino DVD release of “It”. Let’s initiate by saying this is one of the most exquisite calm films I’ve seen. This is entirely due to the presence of Clara Bow, whose dynamic performance never lets up for a second. This makes “It” one of the few silents that collected works as entertainment rather than unbiased an consuming chop of history. The reasons I deem this DVD could have been even better lie with the fact that Kino has old the 1978 restoration version of this movie rather than the improved 1992 restoration. Whilst this 1978 restoration is composed very suited, the report is slightly cropped. In other words, a runt section of the portray at both the left & correct and top & bottom of the shroud is missing. This blemish is barely noticeable and does not really affect your viewing pleasure, especially as the narrate quality itself is very impressive. Clear, there are marks and scratches here and there, but far less than you’d put a question to for a film well over 70 years customary. The characterize is generally quite animated with decent disagreement that only occasionally seems a small too harsh. I would rate the describe as being in the top 5% for movies of this age. The second reason this DVD could have been better is the music bag. The 1992 restoration features a Carl Davis composition which is quite simply the best music come by for a restful film you will ever hear…Unfortunately this DVD features a totally different find by William Perry. Whilst William Perry manages a perfectly adequate piano get that fits well with the movie it isn’t a patch on Carl Davis’ version. The “only” extra on this DVD is a documentary entitled “Discovering The It Girl”. This only covers Clara Bow’s life and career in a superficial draw but we are treated to a wealth of movie clips. Contributions from people who knew Clara Bow also abet do this a very palatable documentary. It’s also worth noting that Kino previously released the movie and documentary on two separate VHS tapes. By buying them both on this one DVD instead of two videos you’re actually saving yourself a few dollars! Notwithstanding the minor shortcomings, I definitely rate this DVD as a worthwhile recall.

I reflect others have pointed out this but I’m gonna stress it.

The Kino one has ample extras (a docu on Clara Bow’s life) but a awful image transfer.

I stumbled on “Stand” by chance. I was on the phone with my sister who was watching a cable health program that I could not get. I immediately hung-up the phone and called my cable station. As a result of adding the health channel, I received several other stations including TVOne. Later that evening I’m surfing the channels and stopped when I saw Tavis Smiley on a bus with Cornel West and Michael Eric Dyson. I was instantly pulled in.

What an experience! I felt like I was an invisible passenger on this amazing journey. I was given a unique view into the bond that unites these black men. I went through so many emotions during this bus trip. I laughed, cried, and got a little hungry by all that soul food. I was in awe by the memories, the depth of the discussions, and the spirit reaching music. I did not want the trip to end. I got off the bus energized, proud, and ready.

This is a must see…for every African-American male, young and old.

I have this movie on VHS, in Japanese. and I thought it was good, so it on DVD will probably be very good too. This takes place after Gokou had returned on Earth after the Freezer encounter on Namek. It deals with an evil Namek-jin who comes to earth, Planning to use earth as his new Planet Cruiser. Yes, a planet cruiser, they had figured out how to make the planets cruise around space. He was born on Namek, but sent away around the same time Piccolo did, except he landed on the Planet Slug. Thanks to being raised on that planet, he and the rest of his teams couldnt take the sunlight, because Slug was a dark planet. So they first had a machine that took away the sunlight, which would end up killing most all life on Earth and also used the Dragonballs to make him young again. But it also turns out that he’s a Super Namek-jin, like Piccolo, a mutated one because he can grow taller than the buildings on earth. But Piccolo is able to find his weakness, because Piccolo has the same weakness….. but dont worry, I’m not going to spoil the ending for you all.

The fourth DBZ movie, Lord Slug was originally released in Japan under the title “Super Saiya-Jin Gokuu” but was changed into Lord Slug after being dubbed into English and released in the U.S.A. This movie is a bit shorter than the others, but it is still good. I love the first song, besides the theme, played on this movie, I was “playing the music” in my head ’cause it was so cool. It wasn’t all that funny when Gohan and Higher Dragon annoyed Piccolo in the beginning, but it was a little. This movie practically gets right to the point, basically right after that scene the movie gets down to business. First we see a so-called “computer simulation” of a giant meteor destroying the planet, then some more kick … music starts to play and it shows Goku and Krillin trying to deflect the asteroud with their Kamehameha beams fused together (I’m not telling what happens to the asteroid). Let’s jump forward to after Goku starts fighting Lord Slug, now, Slug gets him enraged and Goku gets really strong, people say that he went Super Saiyan but actually Goku never goes Super Saiyan until DBZ movie 5 (which is Cooler’s Revenge). Still, the way Goku charged like a bull straight at Lord Slug was really cool, but after that, then it wasn’t cool again until Goku was back on his feet after a thorough …-whoopin’ from Slug and powers up a Kaio-Ken attack. Unlike the first three movies, Goku sounds like he does in the series. It’s kind of disappointing to hear Goku raged up in the first three DBZ movies ’cause he kinda sounds like a girl. The Super Saiyan transformation was great (it’s easier just to call it Super Saiyan, so let’s do just that, ‘kay?) and he looked cool with waving black hair, red shadowing (his hair, I mean) and his pupils cannot be seen. Some people say it looks stupid, but I think it looks fairly cool. All in all, this was a great DBZ movie and you should buy it right away.

Oh yeah, that first song besides the theme that I was talking about, it is by Finger Eleven and it is called Drag You Down.

California State University Fullerton’s Professor Patricia Craig, gave an eight hour lecture and informational session to the Arts and Entertainment for the award winning Biography series to sum up into this 2 hour video. Her interest brought new ideas and makes alive the story of an already vibrant history of a late-blooming Dutch born painter destined to take Paris by storm. Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings are sold at Christie’s Auction house at the highest value in the world’s history of famous painting sales. A Japanese business man loved his purchase so much, he gave directions to be cremated with his Van Gogh. I am not an art history major, but there are only a few times you run into a professor that brings such passion into their work that they seem to inspire and motivate all those who come into her path. Combined with the style of the director, this A&E production was produced like none other. “Your profession is not what brings home a weekly paycheck. Your profession is what you are put on Earth to do. With such passion, with such intensity, it becomes spiritual in calling.” – Van Gogh.

I think this video gives lots of information, without being boring. The A&E’s series is always good and I highly recommend this Van Gogh video if you want a good introduction to the life of one of the greatest artists in history!

As Virgil says, “I don’t like puppets.” But I will make an exception for this work of art. The technique is similar to the Shadow Puppetry of SE Asia. At one point, Ulysses introduces a movie of what he did after Troy. The “movie” uses the traditional shadow puppets to show Bush’s fantasy of bringing democracy to the Middle East. The entire movie is clever in its use of the puppetry.
This is the ultimate message movie with heavy-handed commentary. But hey, it’s Dante’s tour of Hell, no subtlety needed. I have only read summaries of the original story so cannot tell you how close it is to Dante’s version. Beatrice makes a token appearance. But the people shown range from Lizzie Borden to the man who set up the Jews to be blamed for the crucifying of Christ. There’s even a surprise guest from the Bush Administration. Fox News provides some transportation.
Gay men are shown being forced to dance to techno music. Someone is condemned for downloading Metallica. Several Popes show up, including John Paul II. Somehow you will be offended by this movie. Get over it.
I am looking forward to owning my own copy so that I can pause the film and read the signs on the scenery.

“Dante’s Inferno”

A Modern Realization

Amos Lassen

“Dante’s Inferno” is a subversive and darkly satirical realization of the original which was written in the14th century. It is not regular movie fare–it is presented with the use of intricate paper puppets and miniature sets. We are taken on a travelogue of Hell and it looks a lot like the way we live today. Dermot Mulroney is the voice of Dante and he awakens to find he is lost in a strange part of town, both in reality and in metaphor. James Cromwell is the voice of Virgil, the ancient Roman poet and he has a mullet haircut. Dante follows Virgil through the depths of Hell and they enter the very underbelly of the inferno which very much resembles modern urban life. We see slums and used car lots, strip malls and gated communities (it kind of looks like Little Rock, Arkansas until we see the U.S. Capitol Building). There are politicians and popes and icons of pop culture and they are all sentenced to cruel and unusual punishments. Lucifer is nothing more than a human appetizer dipped in fondue. The punishment that all receive fits the crime of which each is guilty. Dante, as he spirals through all nine stages of hell, realizes the method of punishment. He comes out of his journey determined to change the course of life he has been on.

The director, Simon Birk, gives us an amazing modernization of a classic and he seems to fear nothing. He is innovative and creative and his humor, while at times sardonic, is wonderful. You must remember that this is not the inferno as Dante wrote it and Birk seems to use a combination of Monty Python and Mike Judge to come to his black humor. The animation is amazing and the use of puppets is stunning and the sets are impressive. The script is ripped from the headlines of today’s press.

This is a message movie and to deliver what it wants to say it uses very heavy commentary. There are plenty of laughs and here is astoundingly good entertainment. (Of course if you have read the original the film is that much more entertaining).

I am a broad fan of Star Wars. YEs, I am an ‘Original Fan”. And why is being an ‘Original’ fan percieved so negatively? If you are an new Beatles fan, the newer fans ask you with reverence what it was like seeing them in concert, etc. etc. (No, I am not fortunate enough to be an ‘original’ Beatles fan. I wasn’t even born in 1964.) Current Star Wars fans are called oldtimers and accused of not letting go of the past and not appreciating that times change.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Star Wars Trilogy! Click HereMr. Rehnquist wrote in his review “I ask, who would want to look faded, outdated movies in this age of advanced technology? ” Well, I hope the reply is “Many People”. My cherish of movies is not based on the level of special effects. Should we no longer sight the tall obsolete sad and white films of the past because they are ‘old and outdated’? No more Bogie and Bacall? No more Hepburn and Tracy? What about Gene Kelly? Jimmy Stewart?

The thing Mr. Lucas is forgetting is that more is not always better- in an interview when the movies first came out, he was quoted as saying that the pickle with the Sci-Fi genre in general was that so many moviemakers forgot about the fable. The movies ended up being built around the special effects.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Star Wars Trilogy! Click HereUnfortunately, Mr. Lucas is adding all of these scenes and filming the newer movies (Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones) with nothing but the possibilities of these special effects in mind. He has lost the story; it had become secondary to the special effects.

I had no quandary with the celebratory scenes added at the raze of “Return of the Jedi” but I do have a dilemma with some of the other scenes. Han shot Greedo. Greedo did not shoot first. It is ridiculous to change this. Han’s change of heart and redemption are more distinguished when you know he was a mercenary! He was always looking out for himself. That’s how he survived! He was in it for the money, and found himself inexplicably drawn to the people of the Rebellion. That’s gracious story-telling.

The predicament is that Mr. Lucas has taken the liberty of CHANGING worthy of the tale with these scenes.

Mos Eisley was supposed to be a dusty, deserted town. Tatooine is on the outer rim of the galazy. It’s an unimportant, dusty, underpopulated planet. What I saw in the “Special Editions” was a thriving, well-populated town.

I would happily purchase the special edition versions if I knew Lucas intended on eventually releasing the modern versions on DVD as well. I’d bewitch both.

We’re not trying to erase the movies you care for. If you like the “Special Editions” Enormous! I am jubilant. I would never bid any of you to shut up or that your opinions were dead and your views outdated as we have been told by Mr. Rehnquist.

We modern fans aren’t telling you unusual fans that the version we grew up with should be the only one out there. Please have the courtesy of relizing we are only asking for the opportunity to hold these movies the diagram we fell in cherish with them.

The rumors are honest about this DVD place being a “Special Special Edition”. More changes have been made to the unique Star Wars trilogy since 1997. Recently, many images, sounds, and even a full-length copy of Return of the Jedi have been floating around on the internet, all of which confirm the changes.

Like it or not, here are some of the major alterations:

A Original Hope

1. Greedo peaceful shoots first, but it is slightly improved.

2. Jabba the Hutt is mild in the film, but has been completely redone.

3. The lightsabers have been enhanced; they are no longer white rods in sure scenes.

The Empire Strikes Back

1. Actor Ian McDiarmid now appears as The Emperor via hologram, with novel dialogue and different music.

2. Actor Temuera Morrison now provides the hiss of Boba Fett.

Return of the Jedi

1. Naboo has been added to the ruin celebration montage.

2. Actor Hayden Christensen appears as the ghost of Anakin Skywalker at the slay of the film.

I have always felt a spiritual companionship with wolves, and this DVD is one that I will cherish forever. Nature: Yellowstone takes an intricate look at the lives of a few packs of wolves in the Yellowstone region of North America. The way in which these various packs of wolves were depicted, and the time and energy it took to follow them from season to season, really gave me the impression that whoever worked on this piece really cared about what they were filming (creating), and they were willing to take the time to make sure that their footage contained emotional content, and that it was also carefully orchestrated. Christmas in Yellowstone (program two on this DVD) was also very good, and it proved to be a good accompanying piece to program one. Another great DVD about one wolf in particular is Nature: The Wolf That Changed America

I got this recently for my gf, and we both loved it! The special on wolves is very interesting and shows off any high def theater. This program is absolutely and completely different from the wolves in the Planet Earth series. The wolves featured in this series are primarily the druid pack in Yellowstone Park’s Lamar Valley and the program focuses on their hunting in the winter, among other differences. The wolves are referred to by number, rather than by name (a little annoying to follow at times). Their stories are also well documented at [...]

I will admit that the Christmas in Yellowstone is fairly worthless. But one can’t complain too much at 1080p video of one of the nations best parks in winter.
